What to Pack in Your Carry-On: A Complete Guide
Whether you’re a first time traveler or travel frequently, it’s important to remember to pack all of the essentials for a safe and easy trip. Make sure to keep the items below in your carry-on for easy access, as you’ll need to use them multiple times while traveling.
What To Know When Packing Your Carry-On:
- Size Limit for Carry-On Luggage: 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches
- Weight Limit for Carry-On Luggage: 40 pounds. This can vary by airline, so be sure to check before your flight.
- TSA Liquid Limit: Liquids in your Carry-On must be 3.4 ounces or less. If your liquids are larger than the limit, use TSA-Approved travel size containers to pack liquids.
- What NOT To Pack in Your Carry-On: Be sure to check TSA Guidelines for a full list of items that are not allowed in your Carry-On.
The Ultimate Carry-On Packing List
ID or passport
When traveling, you will need to use your ID or passport as a form of identification. You will need it to get through TSA security, board your plane, and clear customs if you are traveling internationally. To keep your ID or passport safe, I recommend keeping it in a secure spot in your carry-on backpack or personal item. You should also consider carrying a copy of your ID or passport just in case your original identification is lost or stolen.
Travel Documents
When traveling, it is important to bring copies of your printed flight tickets, hotel reservations, transportation details, and any excursions. I recommend keeping all of your travel documents in a single folder or envelope.
If you are traveling internationally, you will need these details when filling out the customs forms on the flight. Exiting the airport can be a hectic experience, so it is important to have your printed transportation details so that you can find your driver or ask for help locating their company if you cannot find them.
Wallet
When traveling, I switch to a smaller, packable wallet instead of bringing my bulky everyday wallet. I recommend bringing a few different debit and credit cards, just in case a restaurant or store doesn’t accept your bank or credit card company. It’s also essential to bring cash with you for eating at local restaurants, shopping in smaller towns, and tipping the staff at your resort. If needed, you can exchange your dollars for the local currency at the airport, some hotels, or local banks.
Electronics
Pack your laptop, phone, camera, chargers, and any other electronic devices you will need in your carry-on. This will ensure that you have them with you at all times, and that they are not lost or damaged in transit. If you are traveling internationally, don’t forget to bring a plug adapter.
Prescription medications
If you take any prescription medications, make sure you pack them in your carry-on. This is important because you will need them on the plane, and you may not have access to your checked luggage if your flight is delayed or canceled. You should also pack a copy of your prescription in case you need it. It is also a good idea to pack an extra supply of prescription medications in case your luggage is lost or delayed.
* If you are traveling internationally, check with the embassy or consulate of your destination country to see if there are any special requirements for packing prescription medications.
Pen
An essential if you’re traveling internationally. For years, I would always forget to pack a pen in my carry-on luggage. I always had to rely on asking the people around me to borrow their pen when customs forms were handed out during my flight.
Water Bottle
Everyone knows how expensive a bottle of water can be at the airport! Bringing your own water bottle is essential for staying hydrated, especially if you are traveling on a long flight. You can bring an empty water bottle through security, and then fill it up at one of the many water fountains or filling stations in the airport.
Small Snacks
When traveling on longer flights, I always pack several snacks in my carry-on. The snacks offered by airlines tend to be limited, and airport food is notoriously overpriced. I recommend packing some of your favorites! My go to travel snacks are protein bars, trail mix, and crackers.
Change of Clothes
If you are traveling on a longer flight, especially an overnight flight, I recommend packing a change of clothes in your carry-on. This way, you can wear your comfortable lounge clothes on the plane, and change into fresh clothes before arriving at your destination. A change of clothes is also helpful in case your luggage is lost or delayed.
Portable Charger
Portable chargers are a must-have for every traveler, especially when traveling internationally. I am constantly charging not only my phone, but my laptop and camera, when on the go. My favorite portable charger attaches to your carry-on as a luggage tag, but also has the functionality of a charger. I highly recommend keeping a portable charger accessible, as you may not always have access to power outlets or may need an adapter to access the power outlet.
How To Optimize the Space in Your Carry-On
Fitting all of your essentials in a carry-on can be difficult, especially if you are only bringing one bag. Use these tricks to optimize the space in your carry-on and make sure you have everything you need for your trip.
Packing Cubes
Packing Cubes are the most important essential to optimize and organize your packing space. Using cubes helps keep your clothes organized, by category or by pre-planned outfits for each day, and helps you maximize the space in your carry-on. They come in a variety of sizes and colors, so you can find ones that fit your needs perfectly.
Shoe Bags
Keep your shoes safe while keeping your clothes dirt free with shoe bags. Shoes are one of the bulkiest items you’ll be packing, so it’s a good idea to pack them in the bottom of your bag. This will help to keep them from taking up too much space and it will also help to protect the rest of your belongings from getting dirty.
Hanging Cosmetic Case
To optimize space when traveling, I always use a hanging case to organize my toiletries and cosmetics. These organizers are a great way to keep small items organized and to help you maximize the space in your carry-on.
Jewelry organizer
The easiest way to keep all of your jewelry organized while traveling is to use an organizer with dividers. If you’re only bringing minimal jewelry, I recommend opting for a smaller jewelry case. If you’re the traveler who loves to accessorize, pack your jewelry in a hanging jewelry case to keep your jewelry untangled without taking up too much space in your suitcase.
Tech organizer
The easiest way to keep your chargers and cords organized and in one place where you can always find them. I highly recommend using a Tech Organizer if you’re traveling with a laptop or camera gear.
The Best Carry-On Luggage
The most important way to optimize the space in your carry-on is to choose the right bag. Look for a bag that is the right size and that has plenty of compartments and pockets. This will help you to stay organized and maximize the space in your bag.

Choosing Your Personal Item
Choosing your personal item comes down to what you need with you on the plane. Be sure to choose a bag or duffel that can fit all of the essentials you need in the airport or during your flight. Choose a bag that is comfortable to carry, as you’ll be walking through the airport with your bag. You should also choose a bag that is durable, and will last through the wear and tear of your vacations.
